Sapwood

August 3, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Sapwood is the younger, outermost wood of a tree. It is generally considered to be “alive” as it principal function is to conduct water from the roots to the leaves. As the tree ages, the sapwood dies and becomes heartwood. Sapwood is usually much lighter in color and will appears as light streaks in lumber. We usually cut around this material but on occasion, it can be used to create visually striking patterns.
